Games based on hot films are rarely good, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory doesn't break this trend. This mushy action game for kids was released for the GameCube entertainment system by game maker Global Star and publisher High Voltage Software/ Backbone.
Globalstar and High Voltage have made the game strictly for kids, leaving those older fans of the film out of the gameplay.
Basically, find a Golden Ticket and, along with four other children, win a personal tour of Willy Wonka's factory guided by the notorious and reclusive candy-maker himself. Acquire incredible abilities by using fantastic new candies in order to save the factory. Stop the "rotten" children from causing chaos and destruction throughout the candy factory. Repair huge, bizarre candy-making machines by solving puzzles and enlisting the help of the Oompa-Loompas.
High Voltage tried their best to incorporate some play mechanics into an otherwise average platforming affair. The GameCube title is found too easy. Some of the level design seems funny, although some details stick out that make you feel like you're in the middle of the factory. And third, the game lacks extras. Once it's beaten, it's beaten, and there's really nothing to come back to.
The look and feel of the game is virtually identical across all three console platforms, although the Xbox version features slightly sharper graphics. It also has Dolby Digital and boasts 720p support for high-definition TVs. The sound is alright as well, with decent voicework and lively music. The music and audio effects, however, are outstanding.
