DRAGON QUEST VIII: JOURNEY OF THE CURSED KING
Monday December 19, 2005.

The most acclaimed Dragon Quest Role-Playing Game series had always being consumed with fanatic devotion. This new PlayStation 2 video game from Square Enix marks a number of firsts for this type of game: It is the first fully 3D game of the series, the first one on the PlayStation 2 and the first time a Dragon Quest game has retained its proper nomenclature.

There are a lot of reasons to pay attention to this game, specially RPG fans, not because is a very well conceived game but because it is a beautiful, simple and satisfying adventure, that brings the classic role playing once again to the business.

The Story begins with an evil wizard named Dhoulmagus that had seized a legendary scepter, cursing the castle from which it was taken and turning the king into a toad like creature and the princess into a horse. You play as a guard that was the only other inhabitant of the castle to survive the tragic events. You and King Trode, the equine Medea, and a portly companion named Yangus needs to track down this foul magician. After the events, you need to follow the evil trail to reveal the plot of the game.

The adventure is a little long, like 50 hours or so for a normal play, and more if you want to get into all of the side activities. There's a whole alchemy side game that involves combining various items to get new accessories, items, weapons, and armor; a quest to scour the world for mini-medals for a bizarre princess; a bunch of optional creatures to battle; skill points to max out; and more. Once you finish the game, there's even an additional ending you can get by loading up your save file. This PlayStation 2 video game definitely offers a lot of content for the curious.

The Graphics are amazing maybe because all the visual style was made by artist Akira toriyama (Dragon Ball Z), wich unique styles are for the first time, getting fully realized in a 3D world. The characters are all well made and vibrant. The scenery is rich and beautiful. The enemies are numeroues and challenging. Definitely this game has a lot of fun and art stamp on it.

The music is as rich as the visual, with a spread of orchestral sounds that runs appropriate to every scene of game. There is a good amount of competent voice acting too and a lot of classic tunes and sound effects, which series fans will be delighted to hear reprised in their updated forms.
