ELITE BEAT AGENTS
Monday Nov 13, 2006.

DS Nintendo ready-to-go video game Elite Beat Agents is a remarkable example of what real fun can be played with the sounds of music and controlled via touch screen. Developer Inis joined publisher Nintendo and tossed it for this danceable action.

DS Nintendo's Elite Beat Agents are a super-secret agency made up of the coolest group of guys this world has ever known. Of course, according to official records, they do not exist. Their leader, an ex-CIA agent named Commander Kahn, scans the world, seeking out cries for help.

When agent Khan finds one, he dispatches the agents, who assist their targets by performing a song and dance. The hypnotic nature of their rocking revives the targets with "Groovy" energy that boosts their willpower and helps them overcome their obstacles. Whether they're helping a lost dog find its way home or helping a babysitter charm a hunky football player, no crisis is too weird.

One of the strangest things about Elite Beat Agents is its soundtrack. The grouping of songs that DS Nintendo has assembled here is equivalent to someone taking the individual music libraries of a teeny-bopper kid and his or her parents, tossing it all into a jar, shaking vigorously, and then scooping out a random handful of songs.

You basically have to learn the individual rhythms of each part of a song, and the game's margin for error isn't very high. As you play, a meter at the top of the touch screen depicts how well you're doing, and a couple of missed hits will drop you into the red quickly.

As a stage begins and the music plays, small circles will appear onscreen with numbers on them. These indicate the beats that you must tap in time with the music. A larger circle surrounds each of these numbers, and it quickly caves in.

Product Features:

  • By tapping and tracing patterns that appear on screen with the stylus, players play along with the song's rhythm

  • After each section, the player gets judged; The animated story changes depending on how well the player performs

  • If the player makes it though the whole song, he or she will be judged on the whole thing and get one of three endings -- the worse players do, the worse the story might end up

  • Every scene is accompanied by rump-shaking tunes, but players have to keep the Elite Beat Agents grooving

  • Rhythm games have come and gone, but no one has ever seen anything like the Elite Beat Agents
