NAMCO MUSEUM
Monday Jan 1, 2007.

Gambe Boy Advance portability transforms any regular in performance video game into a compelling one. That's the case of Namco Museum, which its undoublty a video game arcade of fine gameplay in any of the regulars big game systems.

While the front and back of the box show only four arcade games, Namco Museum actually contains five games. Galaxian and Galaga are shooters that took the Space Invaders concept and moved it forward. Ms. Pac-Man is the maze-and-ghost sequel to one of the most famous games of all time. Dig Dug pits your tunneling character against Fygar and Pooka. Pole Position is an early arcade racing game that translates pretty well to the GBA.

Ms. Pac-man comes in two ways: a reduced-resolution full-screen mode, and a pixel-perfect, vertical-scrolling option. The reduced resolution makes it difficult to watch the eyes of the ghosts to see where they're turning. The scrolling mode is a perfect representation of the video game, as the Game Boy Advance's screen width is identical to the arcade game's width (240 pixels), but the screen must scroll due to the fact that the whole maze can't fit on-screen at once.

Galaga is only in full-screen mode, which means the graphics had to be reduced in size to fit on-screen. Nevertheless, the gameplay and sound remain completely intact.

Dig Dug is still a brilliant arcade video game and here in the Game Boy Advance comes in a scrolling mode. Its difficulty ramps up nice, and more importantly the sound effects and music, are all spot on.

Pol Position its the only video game from the bunch that really looks good on the screen of the Game Boy Advance. The controls are also a bit hard to master as the difference between a digital steering wheel and pedals on an arcade coin-op and an analog game pad on a handheld are enormous.

And the last, but not least, Galaxian: which came before Galaga and is basically Space Invaders with dive-bombing aliens. Still, it's perfectly recreated and plays differently than Galaga does. It's fun listening at its sound effects.
