This compilation game was under the responsibility of studio Taniko to reproduce ten recognizable games from the Atari classic arcade games for Nintendo DS platform. Retro Atari Classics features 10 original Atari games, including Missile Lunar Lander, Command, Warlords, Asteroids, Sprint, Centipede, Pong, Tempest, Breakout, and Gravatar.
Classic arcade games fit the handheld market well, so if you can stand the flawed ports, you'll play it for as long as you have your system.
Each game is playable in its original form as well as in the all new mode. Along with the classic tittles, the game has fresh graphics provided by world renowned graffiti artists. Retro Atari Classic takes advantage of all the innovations the Nintendo DS brings to gaming, including the ability to play head-to-head against another player, up-to-four player wireless multiplayer, touch-screen functionality for tighter game controls, and dual screen gameplay for larger game environments.
The DS' touch screen can simulate the analog rotation knob used on the original Breakout , Warlords, and Pong by sliding the stylus left and right. In the cases of Centipede, MLL, and Command, the touchscreen can balance the former trackball for motion. But there are some complications while playing and trying to control other games.
Atari had already attacked the retrogaming thing a few years back on the Game Boy Advance with Atari Anniversary Advance that shares many of the same games with Retro Atari Classics . And despite some technical limitations such as control and resolution, the GBA versions of these games are superior to the DS editions because of how faithful they were to the original material.
Atari keeps much of the same sound samples from the original arcade games version. There's a bit of music in the menu. There's nothing beyond ten games with no gameplay options to tweak. Some say there is more fun with the classic game versions than with these remixes.
